This is a blog for those who are curious what life in Morocco is like, those who are interested in the Peace Corps, or friends/family who would like to see updates of my life.
A little about me:
My name is Olena and I was born in Odessa, Ukraine and immigrated to the U.S at the age of 9 years old. I have lived a small town near Atlanta for most of my life. When I visited Ukraine for the first time at age 16, I realized my dream of serving the international community. This led me to study International Affairs, Russian, and Spanish at the University of Georgia. After graduation in 2010, I served in the AmeriCorps (nicknamed “The Domestic Peace Corps”). The specific program that I was in was the National Civilian Community Corps, and with this organization, I was able to travel throughout the southwest region of the US with a small team and do a wide variety of service with local NGOs. After completing service, I took a gap year in a small town in Coastal Mississippi….and now, I’m here!
Why the Peace Corps? And why Morocco?
The Peace Corps came to my mind somewhere in the time that I was discovering my “calling” in high school, so it’s something that I have been working towards achieving for many years. I chose Morocco because I find the culture to be very mysterious to me, yet very beautiful. Its unique location in Africa, yet close to Europe, and its language being a cousin of Arabic were also strong factors. I’ve been wanting to learn Arabic for a long time, and I feel like this language will be a great foundation for it. This country, to me, is one big mystery. I came here knowing very little about Morocco, because I want to learn about it organically.
Why blog?
To be honest, I first wanted to pursue making a YouTube channel. But, as I have learned pretty early on, I wouldn’t feel comfortable vlogging in a place that is unknown to me, especially as a volunteer. But I am hoping to possibly film a few isolated videos of answering questions, showing my house, etc.
I’ve created this blog with my family and friends in mind, as I can’t talk to all of them very often. This would be a great way for them to be updated on everything.
And for those who don’t know me, but are curious, WELCOME and thank you for visiting!
